Day Watch
Day Watch (Dnevnoi Dozor)
I caught Nightwatch, on TV the other day. I watched a little of it. I was intrigued.
I had seen the trailers. The idea was interesting. Good and Evil, after years of fighting came to terms.
In this universe. Vampires get licences allowing them to kill Humans. Oh did I tell you this a Russian movie. Yes we are a long way from Sunnydale. Its a bleaker world
The Hero, Konstantin broke the agreement, when he made a deal with a Witch. To get back at an ex. The price was that his son, went over to the dark side.
The film starts with Timurlane, with his army camped in outside a city in Medieval Persia. Timurlane. Not someone who turns up in Western movies. Timurlane is searching for the chalk of fate. A magical artifact that enables one to write away time.
We return to Modern Moscow. Our Heroes, cover is a waste disposal agency. In Moscow. They are doing a dirty job, in a snow covered city. We are a long way from Hollywood. This is a gritty cold world. The Gloom, the otherworld that the demons and devils and dark beings inhabit. Is filthy, grimy and riddled with mosquitos.
The foot soldiers of Light and Darkness, inhabit the same tower blocks. There cramped. The Vampires do not have a washing machine. The Vampires son, will attempt to foil his father, but washing his dad's jeans. Leaving the father nothing to go out in. An evil lieutenant is killed, carrying home her groceries. This is Moscow not Sunnydale. The forces of evil works for a living. The Evil commander, is living in a Hotel. There will be a
The Vampires in this universe, seem to be resistant to sunlight. The young vampire is approached by the Evil leader's Moll. Whilst he is playing football, with his classmates. Though it is winter in Moscow. So maybe it is a very small dose of Sunlight.
The hero has to steal something from an Archive. He is messing about with Plastic keys and mobile shelving.
I was actually suprised a few times. The swapping of the lead and the female pyschic bodies, caught me off guard. Its stranger that the female Pyschic looks the same as my friend Esha. Oh and one of the shape changers is a Parrot . Russians like parrots. Oh, and the shape changer gets clothes pegs stuck to his ears, which must be agony in the cold.
Even supernatural powers, have problems with Airport security
There are snippets of Russian humor. The security guard to the Archive. Kisses the poster of his soccer team. The footballers try and rub there faces clean.
Day watch is part of a trilogy. So this may explain why the ending, did not feature a huge good, versus evil clash. The Good great other, is actually rendered Hors de combat, by her evil counterpart
Its a crazy world, its a dirty job, but someone has to do it, and look after the kids. Even a chalk of fate, does not help with that
