Female Agents

I told you I had a thing for nurses

I have seen, a lot of war films. American ones, British ones, German ones, so why not a French one.
I know London quite well, so its interesting to see the city through someone else's eyes
The film is a string of clichés. The rounding up, of the team -Which is I guess as old, as the Iliad.
I was of course reminded of the Dirty Dozen.
Julie Depardieu plays a prostitute. Recruited to the cause When we first see her, she looks awful. She is in prison. She is hired ,as she will dance nude. She later has a topless scene. She looks her age, which is mid thirties. This is not a bad thing, its not inaccurate historically. ( Julie scrubs up beautifully later- But being shown stretchmarks and all rather a brave choice. By the actress)
Gaelle is the Catholique member of the group.
There is the ex mistress of a German, who danced at the Follies Berger, and a Jewish girl
They go to flight school, and I presume have some training, in the arts of war.
Oh dear, there looks like a non segregated unit
(This may be true for the French military)
The lieutenant is Sophie Marceau's brother. He actually strong arms, one of the girls. The dancer, into joining them, physically pushes her around, while blackmailing her with the threat of a trial.
He has to sleep with Gaelle, to get her to join. Quite an imposition
The SS colonel, Heinrich is a bit young, for a colonel. There is dialogue, that he joined the HJ, to get into officer training school. Hmmm. So, 21 in 1939. That's 26, now. Now that might be possible in an infantry regiment natural leader and battlefield promotions, but he works in an intelligence agency. Rank, might be honorary as if he is meeting Rommel
The original plan, goes well. The ladies must rescue a geologist, who was captured sniffing around the Normandy beaches. They come close to killing the Colonel. Who is urinating
Sophie Marceau looks like the Angel of Death -dressed as a nurse. After the rescue Gaelle asks them to, light a candle for them in the church.
(Gaelle is beautiful, she is played by Déborah François. Looks like a curvier Natalie Portman. Her and the Dancer, are curiously Belgians)
Anyhow, has the girls, are about to fly away to England. The Geologist tells them the German colonel, knows about Phoenix. They must eliminate him, at all costs. The Germans, ambush the landing site, and le femmes escape, losing their men folk
Julie's Depardieu, and the Dancer, wish to go home. They were told it was just one mission, and our sympathy is with them.
A lot of American war films, are criticised for being one sided. Famously Errol Flynn, in Objective Burma. British War films, for historical reasons are perhaps too black and white. The choices people on mainland faced, 1939-1945. Were not so black and white. In this film, we hear Petain speak. We see a black marketer.
The tensions, in France, and between the Allies are noted. De Gaulle and Churchill squabbles are referred to in the cast. Though the movie ends, with Churchill broadcasting to London, the War is over. Not De Gaulle saying Paris is free
Then its simply a question of killing the German colonel. However as our girls travel to Paris. Sophie faints. A German doctor, tells her she is pregnant
(Its telling, that when asked when her last period is, Sophie answers before the war. Lots of women during ww2. Were under the weight to menstruate)
Unlike, male counterparts. Who children, are in photographs. The heroes of this film are mothers
Gaelle is captured at the station. Alas
There is a torture scene. The Germans here, are quite matter of fact, and simple. No thumb screws, no matches under the nails. Punches, and a water torture.
Poor Gaelle breaks. She gives up her comrades. Who were hiding mischievously in the School for the blind.
So it becomes a game of cat, and mouse. With Gaelle being used as bait. However the Dancer, can be used to trap the colonel. So, whom is hunting whom.
One of the resistance contacts works at the natural history museum in Paris. I thought there were a lot of Dinosaurs. They had a whole forest of skeletons.
So, there is an ambush planned on the Paris Metro. As we go underground. The camera lingers on the perfect posterior of a woman in an orange skirt.
Julie Depardieu, has now become a super spy, after becoming the tart with the heart. Sadly the ambush fails. Sophie is captured
She meets up with Gaelle, Sophie slips, Gaelle, a cyanide pill.
Gaelle then strips off, and in cruciform's, takes her own life. To escape an SOE trial.
Watching the Torture of his sister, the Lieutenant breaks. The Dancer, takes her own life, after failing to kill the Colonel. Julie D, was wearing a chambermaids uniform.
She then rescues, Sophie, from a German prison van. With a black marketer she had shamed into doing his duty. Sophie manages to kill the German colonel, whilst displaying the most plausible German accent of the film.
Poor Julie, dies in Ravenwald. Tortured we would discover later, and Sophie spends the rest of the war, (having escaped to London) as a Nurse. On a very restrained VE-day. We see Sophie light candles in a London Church
It had its fair share of cliches. It was interesting, some scenes were strange, Gaelle's death. Some high tension too
