Robin Hood
Oh its not a bad movie at all!
There are shades of Gladiator, and Braveheart. Even of Robin Hood prince of thieves. Oh and Shakespeare
Crowe’s accent is hard to place. It’s not Irish though, I hear a couple of Irish accents every day. Crowe doesn’t have one. He says ``Ye’’ which is an anachronism in Hiberno-English.
To be honest I don’t really know why Crowe felt the need, to have an accent. He plays an Englishman in Master and Commander. He played Comodius in Gladiator, without being Tony Curtis in Spartacus. ``Singer of Songs’’ Or the ``Cammadaarrr of thee Garrison of Roem! Geez whizz Thanks’’
Cate Blanchett does an English accent playing Marian. So I suppose that Crowe felt he needed to raise his game. Audiences have not noticed Houston’s Hiberno-French accent, as the Cour de Leon, nor Kevin Durand’s Scotch accent.

Yes him, from Lost, 3.15 from Yuma, and X Men origins.
Robin is an Archer in Richard’s army. He and his little band, are fighting when they are happened upon by king Richard. Here you think, your running into Gladiator 2. With Houston as Marcus Aurelius. The narrative changes
The Siege of Acre gets a mention, and the massacre of the Muslim civilians afterward. After Robin and his men have encountered a disguised Richard. Unlike Prince Harry, Richard will exact a price for the honesty of his men. Aping Shakespeare Robin’s band were from throughout Great Britain a Welshman, (There is a joke about sheep) A Scot and an Englishman. As well as a Newfoundlander-(Irish?)
Loxely’s father is played by a Swede. Which is fine.
Robin longstride is an old soldier. Playing the shell game, to win a bag of onions. Robin Talks about poaching deer. When Richard is killed at the siege Robin and his men, desert to the coast
Mark Strong Plays an English traitor. He played a similar role in Sharpe’s Mission

The film is clearly set before 12.15 at Runnymede. The Magna charter is looming over the film
William Marshal is name checked
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Marshal Indeed he has a role. One of the hardest men, who ever lived. Played by William Hurt here.
Many of the best scenes are played in Nottingham. Mark Addy doing a good job with Tuck
( Who is a bee keeper. Which is quite a modern angle Bee Keeping is now a fashionable pursuit ) Robin’s men rather charmingly coarse. There is one scene at well, literally a barn dance. When the widows and maids of the village corner the merry men. Its an English Idyll,
Some of the Geography of the film seems confused. Lincoln, Barnstaple, Nottingham and Peterborough, are name checked as a baddie does a circut
Curiously do Robin and Marian dance to ``Women of Ireland?’’

There was rumour that the original plot, was to have Crowe as the sheriff of Nottingham. In places you see this John is often more articulate and sympathetic than he is often depicted. He mention’s how selfish and useless Richard was as a King. Losing lands and costing a fortune in ransom. ( Richard was captured and held prisoner on his return from the crusade)
Crowe and Cate do not hide their characters ages. Which is a change. Marian rebukes Robin mildly for calling her a girl. Oh and strictly speaking Marian as a widow is not a Maid. In what of their world, we see. It's a world where women and men live in two different world’s. Men are fighting. The women working. The exception being Eleanor, who wonders too and fro. William Marshal seeking her counsel, and her scolding King John in his Bed Chamber. This rule is broken later in the film, but that demands a spoiler
I enjoyed it. It may be an obvious Franchise. Its still not a bad film. I like Russell Crowe’s work. I am sucker for a good historical epic.
A solid B, I will probably go and see the sequels.
