Paths of Glory

Strong meat this one

Battle scenes are excellent. Black and white forgives a lot- I thought it compared well with 1917

I was suprised with how much of an info dump we got about WW1 at the beginning of the film. I wonder if this film inspired the court martial episode in Black Adder. The cliche of the General in WW1 sitting in a Chateau well this film doesn't

I can see why Kubrick liked Douglas. He is very good in this. Ramrod straight, and dashing.  The three men, who are facing death have a better part. We see them break down. One is broken The American accents are not grating. The horror of the certainty of death and the spectacle of an execution is well done.

The final scene with the actress who is  Kubrick's wife being presented almost as a prize to the French soldiers is horrifying.
