District 9
Onimious metaphor hovers over the head of Johannesburg
Its filmed in mockumentary style. There are the talking heads. The landing of the Alien space craft over Jo’berg is discussed. The Aliens were helpless and Malnourished. So the South African government cut open the ship, and resettled the Aliens on Earth.
Then things started to go wrong. The Aliens, the `prawns’’ were blamed for crime. They wrecked trains. So the RSA decided to resettle the prawns Away from Jo’Berg.
A multi national is charged with handling security in evicting the Prawns. The officer who will lead the charge. Is a man called Wikus
Wikus reminds me of Steve Carrell in the American version of the office. His father in law, and Boss. Tells the camera he was not very bright. He is a devoted husband. He makes small gifts for his wife.
Whilst Wikus occasionally reminds you why no one loves Afrikaners. He is not a monster. For example Wikus clashes with one of the PMC early on , in the film. He notices that the PMC is carrying to much ammo. He uses cat food, rather then
There job is to evict the Aliens. They need to get a palm print. In the time honoured fashion. The eviction act is read out, and the evictee asked to sign.. As it was with the Choctaw and the Xhosa.
During this, Wikus discovers an Alien canister, and sprays himself with it by accident. Making himself sick…..
The smart Prawn, complains about his people being used as medical experiments. Surely he left them defenceless, and leaderless.
The Nigerians, the middlemen gangsters who also live in district 9 sell interspecies prostitution. The Nigerians also practice Mutu
District 9, has the eyes of the entire world upon it. Yet a shoot out between heavily armed Nigerian gangsters, is allowed. People worry about ``prawns’’ being killed. No one seems bothered about Nigerians exploiting the aliens for gain
There is a tragically funny scene, where Wikus is treated to a surprise party after having been made sick by the canister. Wikus had just defecated in his trousers.
The South African setting is different. Wikus is probably the first and last Afrikaaner hero will see in cinema. That said do we really need to be told apartheid was bad? Well I suppose there is a generation whom have grown up with Nelson Mandela, being a free man and a feted figure.
That said I felt the metaphor here had been literalised. The prawns were not human. They had their own agenda. They always did…
Still a thoroughly enjoyable trip to the cinema.
