Glee

There is a girl at work. One of the newbies. She is a smart girl, but lacks confidence in herself. Her boyfriend is in a band and she was talking to him. She referred to him as the creative one.

Which was a shame. As she is a smart lady, but as I said she lacks confidence. So she deferred to her boyfriend. The creative one

That is a problem with the world. We watch sports rather than play them. We go to galleries rather than paint. We listen to music rather than sing

A lot of Pop culture is imposed from above. It is imposed by a self appointed elite. We notice this with High culture, but we defer shamelessly and cowardly to self appointed arbiters of pop and middle brow culture

For the love of God Amanda Holden tells people they can’t sing, and millions of people watch

During the great depression, people went to see Musicals. During World war two. What you think you have it harder than a Clydeside steelworker, do you think your life is more real than the lower East side, leather factories

Yet the musical died. With the exception of Grease. They slipped away, at least in the west. Bollywood sings and dances, as if they do not expect the morning to come. Oh you had the Monkees you had Madness playing on the Young ones, but it was always by pop’s rules

It was always what the cool kids rules

Than something started to sneak back. When I went to America, in 1997. I listened to

All the way, to Texas. Funnily enough in family guy. You hear  the songs . From Gilbert and Sullivan, to Journey. I think it was Family guy that resurrected that song.

The kids got the high school musical franchise. Disney doesn’t miss a trick

and then there was Glee.

I should hate Glee. I would not watch the High school musicals there not aimed at me. Skins, Sugar rush, and one tree hill. Turn me off. As they should, I am twice the age of the market

so why Glee?

Well Glee has cheerleaders. ( I am not dead) Indeed the lead character is a Jewish American princess. Oh yeah we have been down that road before.

Well in part the same way as I can watch the inbetweener’s  Since there losers. They are not pretty people. Those shows used to make me feel isolated and lonely . Everyone else was having sex, and I was stuck in a room with a handicapped sibling, with cheap shoes. With not even the price of a smack

Firstly Glee, is pitched at the adults too. The lead, Will Shuster, is stuck in a dead end job, with a shrew of a wife. Who wants him to be an accountant, so she can max out her pottery barn store card.

Will, remembers his days ``when he wore a younger man’s clothes’’ He tries to recapture his youth, to reconnect with it, by restoring the McKinley High School Glee club to its former glory

Glee combines the sheer joy of singing. The putting of words into song. More than that

`` the human condition can be improved by singing about it’’. ( S. Slyvester)

As David King of Israel did, they danced for joy.

2 Samuel 6:14 And David danced before the LORD with all his might ...

The show is more than that, in the sweetness there is a sourness. In the heaven, of diversity. Where Latina and African American, geek and chic go arm in arm there is a serpent

Sue Slyvester:

The devil in Adidas

sue-sylvester-vogue

A state cheerleading coach, she provides the spite, the piss and the vinegar, in the episodes, when not insulting Will about his hair. Or screaming at her cheerleaders for screwing up a pyramid.

There is rachel, dear sweet neurotic rachel. An orphan raised by two gay dads. Driven to carve out a niche in the business. I adored her, I bayed for blood in revenge when they egged her. When she found her mother

The show had a black bully, and a had manipulative female characters. Rachel, is often simply awful  It would be sometimes, pc. It nestles too firmly in the breast of identity politics.

Oh and it had Barney from I met your mother, in a episode directed by Joss Whedon

Oh I can talk about it all day, go watch it…

I love you Rachel, I really do

Rachel is not an orphan. Her mother (the marvelous Idina Menzel) gave her up for adoption. So not an orphan.
