Scott Pilgrim

Its the first gamers movie. As opposed to movies about games. The opening titles, for universal have been adapted to look like the Ident for a PC game
Michael Cera, plays Scott Pilgrim. A bass player with a new Chinese School girl friend. Knives. Than a beautiful stranger enters his life. At a party, Where Scott fails to impress the famous or is it infamous romana
At the battle of the bands. Scott is attacked by a stranger in the manner of street fighter 2.
The first ex, does a bollywood dance. Surrounded by demonic cheerleaders. Chris Evans, the Movie star not the DJ, is the next. The film revolves around these set pieces, but it not defined by it.
The young lady playing knives steals the show. She is lovely. The film never takes its eyes off her. Scott does treat her well. The scene when one of the evil exes punches her, and punches her high lights out, had me baying for blood.
Knives is an interesting character she is 17, and an innocent and is dumped by Scott. The film implies he cheats on her. Rather, he more or less  drops here.
We don’t often see, Knives perspective. The girl, in the shadow of the older more confident, girl. You got a hint of it, in the early Buffy episodes. With Willow and Cordy, but here it is.
The movie is set in Canada. I remember Canada. I remember the cold. The snow everywhere. Going to gigs, in the student Union, the loonies. The red heads and the freckles. Gin and T’s. ( I don’t think American’s drink G and T’s for some reason)
There is a joke at Toronto being a stand in for New York. There is possible reference to the old Canadian Girlfriend trope, here it is reversed
Our Romana, was bi, naughty girl!
Coke Zero, slips in some product placement. The swearing is blacked out too. To keep the audience broad
The source material is a few years old. So, some of the tech details are off. The computer looks a little old. There is the sound of modems, in the background. Old whirring modems, or computer tape spooling up
Its not for everyone.  but it has heart. Its brave enough to have the lead character as a jerk. Its the future of films. There is going to be more gamer influence. If this is the case, well like Knives its going to grow into something beautiful
