As I think within this film is an attempt to talk to people, Teenage boys. Think the age group doing there GCSE's in England, or HS freshmen and sophomores. People who don't normally get spoken too. They get told to do things. Buy Nike, play PlayStation, go to class.
Danny McBride, plays one of the The Princes of Mourne. There are more than a few nods to the Northern Irish location. The cast are speaking with British and Irish accents. One point Thaddeus describes himself as a ``pints man''. There is a Nordie telling off the lads in a fight scene, at the Tavern.
The prince, we first see is being is being hanged for seducing the Wife of the King of the Highland dwarfs. They try to hang him, and he is too tall for the scaffold.
The credits, are an animated riff on fantasy movies. A tavern, a wizard, a busty maiden bathing. yadayada yada
Charles Dance, plays the King of Mourne. Toby Young, who we last saw as the Dream lord in Doctor who plays Julie, Damian Lewis, plays one of Fabious band The Knights elite. Quite a good cast in retrospect
There are what the Americans call lots of F bombs. This is actually aimed at a juvenile audience. The film in my opinion actually not bad because of that. The story is the tale of two brothers
Thaddeus, played by McBride, who is channeling Rowan Atkinson in the earliest season of black adder. Thaddeus the younger son, has been eclipsed by his older brother Fabius played by Franco. Thaddeus, spends his time getting high, and laying around. His achievements for one day are recounted as taking a bubble bath and commissioning a nude statue of himself. That will be illegal in the Kingdom of Florida, soon Young Thaddeus. No, not the Bubble bath
If you imagine the Thaddeus as actually being in his mid teens. 15 or so, the story makes sense. Fabius goes on quests and saves the Kingdom, and kills Cyclopes and fights wizards. The younger brother always in his older siblings shadow. A touch resentful. He wants to smash things up, and sulk.
There is a play on the meaning of the word gay having changed, over time. Though my interest in linguistics notes that seed is still understood after all this time, in its most classic biblical sense.
There are lots of riffs, clash of the titans. Fabius, has Simon a winged mechanical owl Spartacus, they fight in the arena. even those lynx/ax adverts. Even going back to Zulu movies. Oh and Conan the Barbarian. Remember, Arnie punching the camel, as they enter the city. Oh and Lord of the Rings, but less of that then you might think
Zooey Deschanel, plays the virgin princess. She reminded me of Diana in the Xena Warrior princess series. Probably not intentional, but the film was like a good comedic episode of Xena or Hercules. There is one nice set piece was Zooey sings beautifully and Franco howls his love back to her
There is interesting scene in which Zooey having been kidnapped, by the evil wizard Leezer, talks about if he is so powerful, why does he need to kidnap her. Hopefully, the idea got into the head of a 19 year old, being spoken down to, by her 25 year old boyfriend. Don’t let people with money and cars talk down to you either . Another interesting thing, is that Leezer snorts a drug made out of these golden Tinkerbelle fairies is shown as a prick While Thaddeus, who is clearly smoking dope is shown as likeable. Thaddeus familiarity with pot, actually gains him some kudos in the opening scenes, as he is able to see through the wise wizard deception. Its all part of the journey, this is a simple road movie, despite the swords and planet backdrop. Your Highness, the older brother has feet of clay. He has been manipulated by people. He is nervous.
Yon plot is simple the brothers go traveling with their older brothers HS friends/college buddies. Older brother falls out with college buddies, and the brothers must escape. On their way, they fall in with a beautiful but perhaps a little dangerous woman. Woman is not impressed by the little brother, little brother makes mistake trying to impress the woman, and almost ruins, their plans. Little brother using his education and applying himself, manages to save the day. Older brother marries his bride. Then there are boobs, and f-bombs, Oh and the nice piece of Bathos, Toby Young asking if there are fish fingers, at the feast.
Natalie Portman plays the mysterious warrior woman. Curiously she is using a bow. Rather like Diana. No, not from Xena, the huntress goddess. There is a little bit of a homage to return of the Jedi, when she makes her entrance. Her acting muscles are not over exerted here. This is a few servings of Ham, but she is lovely. I have a real crush on Natalie. I thought she was my girlfriend between Black Swan, and the movie she made, with Aston Kutcher.
This is movie for an annoying 15 year old. They are annoying but they will grow up. Sometimes, you just need to be patient.
