1990s nostalgia made in the 1990s.
As the film says this talks of a time before the Teletubbies.
The film opens in an idyllic Paris in 1998. A smartly dressed and mustached Tony Morrisey basking in his memories. The film is punctuated with a waiter performing football trick for a small French child The Seine is in view.
If Paris is idolized than so is London. This is a South London, of friendly neighbors- of Dutch football fans who you can go drinking with. Oh and Tapas bars.
If you imagine an episode of Men Behaving Badly-with Tony being more middle class with a touch of magical realism. Then this that is what we have here. You have John Gordon Sinclair, as a Scottish man living with Arabella Weir There is a brief discussion of Sinclair cheating with Morrisey's girlfriend. She seems awful by the way- and also seems to be an early pug enthusiast
It is somewhat interesting as a period piece. The pubs are full of smokers. There are no cellphones, games are recorded on wall charts. I had forgotten how poor Gazza's form was before the 1996 tournament- the Dentists Chair.
The St George fighting the Dragon in the opening ceremony, is something I had forgotten. McCoist's goal I had forgotten. I wonder if there had been a UK national team would McCoist have had Lineker's spot
The criticism of Garry Lineker is interesting- Lineker ended his career in contention
There is a problem with this, is that the character is too old. He is 44 something-Morrissey is 5 years younger naturally. He is also probably better looking, the writer is. So we are left with an odd story about a middle aged man lusting after a beautiful younger woman, and watching football
It feels immature, it feels twee
Des Lyman is not God.
