Its interesting to see Cameron Diaz, aging. I remember her in the mask. That glorious, 5 minutes at the beginning of the movie, when with just wet hair, and cleavage. In another universe, this film might have been the biggest smash in 2003. I seem to remember at one point Diaz and Cameron used to date.
Anyway Cameron Diaz, is a floozie. Who took a teaching job, as cover for her gold digging. Caught out by her fiance and his mother, she has to resign herself to another year, slog,
She nurses hangovers, as her children watch Dangerous minds.
She gains a rival, in Ms Squirrel. The perky, and buxom professional teacher.
The blonde v the redhead. Interesting. The maiden versus the whore.
Curiously when Cameron does start teaching, Her methods are quite conservative. She punishes the children, and demonstrates that she means it. She sends a boy out of class for speaking out of turn. You can even argue she uses a form of physical discipline. Her interactions with the children, are actually not too dissimilar from the way, my teachers did. When she tells the over sensitive boy that his good years will be in college. She is telling a truth. Less so, to the chipper, would be class president.
In a similar vein, there is an argument between the gym teacher and a kid, about who is the better basketball player. Jordan- or Lebron James. One of the few arguments you could have with a teacher
For a gold digger, and someone who is obsessed with body image, Cameron eats a lot junk. She is gorging on a bucket of chicken. When she drives off to Illinois, she snacks on a bacon burger. She also smokes pot, as a solitary vice.
As a film, it flips between a gross out teen comedy. There is a scene of Timberlake, and Diaz dry humping on the bed. Which is just gross. There is a scene with Cameron handling newly enhanced breasts. A scene where miss squirrel, confronts her principle in the bathroom, and someone trapped in the next stall, has to make a superman effort to hold it in...
It tries to keep an eye on the more mature comedies of the Aptow stable too. Cameron does not flinch in telling her charge, who confessed his love for an 7th grade beauty, that his life will be horrible. The rich young man who Cameron pursued. Is shown to be a moron.
The Principle interest in dolphins, may have been kept cleaner, than in the first draft
There is some politics going on here too. There is a mention of the power of the teachers union, in US schools. Racial bias on standardized tests... Medical Maurijana and even Obama
