I enjoyed this a lot more than Jame's Gunn Superman which I viewed on Sunday. The two films are full of CGI, Ready Player one is indeed set in a computer generated universe. The difference was, I cared about the character. I also liked the quest element of the hunt for the three magical keys- this gave me a sent of progress, and a sense of tension.
I also felt this is a film where someone like me, a child of the 70s and 80s is confronting their mortality. The first Easter egg on a video game is something, that if you saw it at 19 years old playing with your pals. You are now looking at retirement options Some day I will not be there, and no one will remember. No one will remember Magnum, and Simon and Simon, and Jono's. Though that make me sad it is correct. Here we see a world that is stunted, that is delayed. The protagonist who lives in an American favella noted the world tried to wait out it problems, rather than fix them. Indeed there is an interesting minor subplot where our male lead has half inched computer equipment from his aunt. An Aunt who spends her time online. In the world of Ready Player one have a stuck culture- the opening scenes are people oblivious to the world acting out everything from lazer fights to love making and lacrosse in their garrets Indeed the resolution of this film has the lead turn off the internet for two days a week, to recenter people on terra firma not terra digitalia The God avatar in this film, is someone who took refugee in computer games, and never had a wife or children
The pop culture references were well done. I liked the Chucky Cameo, It was nice to see Bigfoot
