Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes

I am not a Guy Ritchie fan. The Man made one good film. Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Ritchie  than remade it as Snatch.  The British press ran away with it. The man was lauded and went onto marry Madonna

I remember the bloody TV series FFS!

I could say something about the scar, he sports. I will refrain

This film is not bad. Not bad at all.

There is some clunky speech. I wondered if it was poor direction. Or was it an actor, making a fuss?
As Jude Law's Watson in one instance, tell Holmes to get his cane out of his face.
In another Adler, announces she is finished. It comes across as too modern. In the same way a Jane Austen Heroine would be out of place saying
``Whatever'' or ``lol''

Jude Law's Watson, is wearing his hat, indoors in one scene. Which would have been repugnant in Victorian eyes

There are attempts at Steam Punk. The diabolical machine that is created at the end. The wireless taser Holmes uses in a fight

The Irish play the part of African Americans in the film. Which is accurate. One heavy speaks French. Yiddish would have been more accurate, but neverminded

Downey Jr does a good job as Holmes in my opinion. Irascible and irritating in equal measure. However his deductive skills portrayed as a kind of bullet time may annoy the purists. I did wonder about that. Holmes has never this before indeed he never needed it

They give Watson a Gambling problem. It fizzles out towards the end of the film

The dating of the film is a bit odd. The USCW is mentioned. The Home secretary is sitting in the House of Lords. The Lords are very passive when threatened with their doom. See the Irish Home rule bill in OTL for the manners of the Parliament

Holmes is familiar with Radio waves. Which would put the film about 1887. It is possible, but something of a stretch. It also puts the film at odds with Holmes/Downeys complaint about the new morality/Chambermaids. As the Gay 90s are just a few years away

The US Ambassador, the only other American in the picture. Goes out to a heroes death.

Holmes and Watson eat fish and chips. Fried in a Northern Stout! mmmm!

Rachel Macadams is hot! I do like her!

I wonder if more could have been made of this setting. Watson being a veteran of the Afghan wars, and a London full of new immigrants choking on new tech. The film sets up a sequel. I do hope we get one. The ground has been laid here.

A good film
