Rear Window

I suppose this is a bravura performance by James Stewart because I ended up loathing him Right so James Stewart breaks his leg and is left alone in his apartment to convalesce He is visited daily by an insurance nurse, and his love interest Grace Kelly. To pass the time, he spies on the neighbors. Including Miss Torso- a dancing beauty who doesn't wear much-There is a heat wave on by the way. Though Stewart seems to have many different pairs of pajmas. Others numbering amongst the cast of neighbors are  a musician and a married couple- who sleep on a mattress outside on their balcony  He thinks he sees a murder So why did I end up hating Stewart - because he is ranting to Grace Kelly about being a war correspondent- photo journalist He talks about eating rice with weird food, and it raining all the time. I thought of Peru. I thought yeah its miserable there often and you are complaining while Grace Kelly whose hair literally shines like gold in old pictures- the metapho...

Dr Who episodes 1 and 2 2025

So I watched both back to back yesterday Err okay The two episodes look great I don't dislike Shuti Gatwa I want to make that clear. I do think he is playing the Doctor at the wrong time In these episodes the Dr  seems to be toned down a bit. Which is I think a pity- because I think at his best Gatwa has a bit of Tom Baker energy- He is a big weird he can make you a bit uncomfortable like Colin too   So they seem to have picked an unpleasant person to play the companion.  Remember how the Dr and Tegan made each's other lives miserable why not rehash that They seem to be rehashing Rory's skepticism of the Doctor, and medical banter about being a nurse.  The Robot Rebellion  It is really difficult to see the star's sitting under a street lamp.  Dr Who can condemn incels, and racism. Yet sees nothing wrong with a system when a highly trained medical professional must share a flat- and fear her landlord So the Nurse's first  boyfriend or such m...

The High Road to China

Bess Armstrong is very good in this she got nominated for a Saturn. She well deserved that and more.  She is pretty and charismatic. One of the few modern women who can sell 1920s dress Michael Sherd - Mr, Bronson turns up to be murdered swiftly You can see why Magnum made Tom Selleck. Without Magnum's whimsy and archness Tom who I like as an actor is quite cold Okay so this is a quite an enjoyable historical film Brian Blessed turns up has an Afghan Khan- I wonder if there is a touch of reverse Rambo 3 here. The Afghans are shown as warlike-selling women. For a film released in the 1980s That was on the wrong side of history  Robert Morley is playing the villain for the first hour.  I note aside from white hair he looks no older than in the African Queen. Was that man born at 50 years old Here Morley  is trying to cheat Bess out of her inheritance. I was  confused by this because he Morely is playing a comical effete ``U'' Englishman Yet he is setting mur...

The Rocketeer

Yes I can see why this one failed. I should like it- Its a fun pulpish ride. Jennifer Connelly is radiant. I am jealous of W.C Fields- I wish I had that part! But something is just off? Is it the leading man? I had to look Billy Campbell up- and I think that may be it. He has made  a lot of TV and even some films, but nothing I remember  As a period piece the Rocketeer looks great too. Tommy Guns. All the cars are polished and shining chrome, even the burger looks good and tomato soup looks delicious It holds up very well Timothy Dalton is having a lot of fun- This really must have been great to play. So is Paul Sovirino

Sunset Boulevard

I do like William Holden I am glad I have seen this, and I certainty appreciated it - I am curious to see what the musical is about Oh a car phone - is something different -like  a string and tin can telephone Leopard skin furnishings  Oh so I saw Cecille B De Mille in Person. It was nice to not only put a face to a name, but to get a measure of the man Hollywood in 1950 was producing Hollywood families- Also Cecille and Nora Desmond know the name of the lighting guy, and security guards at the gate Nancy Ann Olson is beautiful. I did wonder if she was distant kin to Elizabeth but no I felt sorry for Gloria going through 1950s beauty care

Paths of Glory

Strong meat this one Battle scenes are excellent. Black and white forgives a lot- I thought it compared well with 1917 I was suprised with how much of an info dump we got about WW1 at the beginning of the film. I wonder if this film inspired the court martial episode in Black Adder. The cliche of the General in WW1 sitting in a Chateau well this film doesn't  I can see why Kubrick liked Douglas. He is very good in this. Ramrod straight, and dashing.  The three men, who are facing death have a better part. We see them break down. One is broken The American accents are not grating. The horror of the certainty of death and the spectacle of an execution is well done.  The final scene with the actress who is  Kubrick's wife being presented almost as a prize to the French soldiers is horrifying.

Went the Day well?

There is something of Daphne from Frasier, about Thora Hird. It is very well cast- the actual range of the accents on screen- West Country, Manchester make it more unsettling Just before I watched this - I watched a video about the treatment of British POW's after Dunkirk. So the petty cruelty of the Germans is more true.  I wonder if Tarratino had this film in mind- when he had the famous three fingers scene in Inglorius Bastards- The 7 and the 5's being written in continental style Mrs Collins killing of the German soldier is well done. Desperate and bloody. The boy being shot-but stumbling on was well done. The film builds and releases tension well

Duck Soup

Is this the grandaddy of them all? They are going to remake the Naked Gun- and the trailer has just dropped. I was thinking some of the scenes would not go astray there. The Brothers playing the guards heads like  a xylophone. Harpo cutting off the horsehair plumes off the guards. The throw away lines. A gas attack- take a spoon of bicarb in a glass of water.  Oh even stock footage- The marathon of people coming to Rufu's aid. Stock footage festival in the Simpsons in one. I did have a more sobering thought- this film makes fun of war. Equally we have soldiers on screen- gas attacks. Whistling past the graveyard? Or people just laughed at it   At one point they sing Hi de Hi, Ho de Ho. I mean sure. The cabinent scene reminded me of the town meeting in Blazing Saddles It is a vehicle for the Marx Brothers and they drive off pretty fast. It has the go and never darken my towels line-which still works Groucho is still funny. You can see how he became a legend His ...

To Have and Have Not

Is Bogart as good as his leading lady co stars Anyway I liked this one. Bacall is hotter than the Carribean sun.  The Queen Conch, is a great name for a boat. I thought about wearing a hat like Bogart but I did not want people to say Hello Sailor to me in the pub Another look at Vichy France-here this is Martinque. It is said there is a French Carrier in the Harbour https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_aircraft_carrier_B%C3%A9arn Travelers cheques were good in the 1940s. Interestingly we get an exchange rate 2500 francs is 50 US dollars.  I think I have been bit by a dead bee. It was dying in my slipper Curiously this feels like the first half of the film. I get it Bacall and Bogart are the stars and we want to see them sizzle. The ending seems to happen off scren

The Maltese Falcon

I am starting to like Bogart You notice Peter Lorre making eye contact and following events in the final confrontation between him and Bogart, and the fat man. They did not use a stand in.  Shipping news in the SF papers. Singapore would be about to fall soon in the real world. The fat man and Lorre are trying to steal from a White Russian General  Peter Lorre has a blue British passport amongst others Bogart offers the police lieutenant and the other cop a drop of whiskey/gin when they come to see him and they accept. He also smokes roll ups. Does Bogart make a gay slur when being harrased by the police Are Bogart and his secretary having a relationship -They are very physically close.  This was talkier than Casablanca. Certainly more morally grey. Interesting. I don't think I will rewatch it

Eurotrip

And we leave black and white behind Quite a strong supporting cast- Vinnie Jones, Lucy Lawless and Matt Damon Oddly the RoI is covered by the Union Jack that and the odd bit in the Vatican at the end. Where they are dressed up in papal regalia and then saved by English fans...hmmm which foot do you kick with So it is a teens and tits movie - the late  Michelle Tractenberg  stars and is lovely Meike's cousin seeks to cross the Hajnal line.  Forgettable fun- It does I think depict how great it is to be young and carefree and have adventures -to be able to just get and go to Berlin.

From Here to Eternity

I am not sure I cared for this one Lancaster gives a commanding performance A very subtle supporting perform from Sinatra Ernest Borgine supporting is malevolent bully. His confrontation with Prewitt at the end showed how cowardly he was, He was afraid to fight Prewitt   I felt like we were watching a proto James Dean/ Teenage Rebel movie. Prewitt is so hard headed and obtuse it is very hard to sympathize with him. You may respect him but you can't like him- Like with teenagers the world crashes into their sheltered  I thought the attack on Pearl would be a bigger deal  It is nice to see Hawaii as always and there is a lot of this bleeding into Magnum- you hear the instrumental music in Memories are for ever

The African Queen

I really liked this one. I can understand why the BBC used to show this on Sunday afternoons- It is a good old fashioned adventure story. Even a war film, and you can just enjoy the romance between Hepburn and Bogart. Most of this film is a two hander between the two  I can see a lot of Katherine Hepburn- in Captain Janeway I noticed that the Kasiermarine ship is crewed by Africans I didn't know the Germans did that Bogart having terrible gas at his introduction is not something I think would be repeated The horror of the mosquito or possibly the  testse is demonstrated well. Bogart talking about seeing cattle being driven insane by insects gives you a sense of the horror of the tropics.  We see Bogart mocking stock footage Bogart seems to have the use of duct tape which surprised me.

Stalag 17

We have Thomas Sullivan  Magnum to thank for recommending this film How did Animal- stand the cold dressed only in long johns He is soaked in mud a few times too. The film is set in that horrible winter of 1944 offscreen Patton is about to relive the Americans at Bastogne   I wonder if Animal is the blueprint for Belushi's character in Animal House - This film is also the inspiration for Hogans's Heroes  I liked the ping pong balls- smoke bomb sequence- Thank you Towering Inferno There is an extended scene of men dancing together-even some cutting in and such. One character dresses up as Betty Grable. It was a more innocent time. One character has been cuckolded and is trying to talk himself into it  The narrator Cookie also seems quite a mild mannered man to be a Sgt  Even in World War Two soldiers could not keep up with their car payments There is a character with shell shock-or battle fatigue  Though this is sometimes played for laughs. It gets de...
