After Death in Venice, and Zardoz I wanted simpler fayre
Carry on Abroad was recommended online. As I have been watching old films for the first time, and watching them properly. I decided to give abroad a go
This is the whole Carry On team- Only Jim Dale is missing
Peter Butterworth
Hatti Jaques
Sid James
Barbara Windsor
Joan Sims
Bernard Bresslaw
Kenneth Connor
June Whitfield.
So the story is simple. A group of holiday makers go on holiday from England to Spain, and find the hotel is not yet finished. There are a series of farcical events
It looks great- this is aspirational. People call each other Mr, and Mrs. People dress for dinner, The hotel interior is clean, and spacious which feels 70s but is not kitsch.
There is a dirty postcard vendor.
Do the Carry on Films like Horror films point to the inchoate Catholicism of the English. Bernard Bresslaw is a novice monk, who falls for a beautiful woman. Or is it the opposite, is the randy monk, still an anti papist tripe
There is an interesting recurring joke about the Spanish manager of the hotel using the progressive tenses of verbs. She is very loving. Rather than she is lovely or loving
I like how quickly the story establishes it self and moves on.
The jokes are quick, and they are good humored. Again the politeness of the cast is established. James, and Conway have a beer
It feels like an escape. A break,
I also note it ends happily, with despite the ups and downs everyone friends
